Usenet is distributed among a huge, continuously changing conglomeration of servers that store and forward data to one another. These servers are loosely connected in a variable mesh. This is like the complicated transportation system of a city. There are a lot of ways to reach any destination in the city. It doesn't matter if some way is blocked, for there is always other roads leading people to where they want to go.
Just like this, the Usenet or User Network allows newsgroup postings to reach their many destinations in a robust manner. As a user, you may read messages from and post messages to a local server operated by your Internet service provider, university or employer, etc. The servers keep exchanging the messages among one another, making the messages available to readers who has nothing to do with the original server.
